Old English fyle "uncleanness, impurity, foulness," from Proto-Germanic *fulitho (cognates: Old Saxon fulitha "foulness, filth," Dutch vuilte, Old High German fulida), noun derivative of *fulo- "foul" (see foul (adj.)). A classic case of i-mutation.
