來自pigeon English(1859),鴿子英語，鳥語，19世紀(jì)中葉上海開埠時歐洲人用以形容中國人說的簡化英語，來自pigeon(1826),鴿子，此詞帶有雙重含義，一是歐洲人用以形容中國人念”business”的發(fā)音有點像在念”pigeon”,鴿子，二是歐洲人用該詞來暗示或赤裸裸的形容當(dāng)時的中國人說英語有點像在說鳥語或像鴿子在叫。在英語詞匯中，pigeon和dove雖然指同一種鳥，但是兩個詞所表達(dá)的感情色彩是不一樣的。后來可能是因為該詞諷刺意味過于明顯，因而將拼寫改成pidgin.
